1. Why should I know about the Hebraic roots of Christianity? Because it will enrich your understanding of the Lord and of His word. According to one estimate, there are over 500 quotations and over 5,000 allusions to the Old Testament in the New Testament. Without a thorough knowledge of the Old Testament, believers miss much of the deeper layers of meaning in the New Testament.
2. I thought the Lord did away with the law and all those “Jewish” things. In Matthew 5: 17-18, Jesus said he came fulfill [give real true meaning to] the law. He went on to state that not even the smallest accent mark in the law would be abolished until heaven and earth disappear. The Jewish things of the Old Testament are not Jewish things, they are LORD'S THINGS. For instance, the seven annual feasts are called the Lord's feast in Leviticus 23: 2, 4, 37, 44. These feasts will be celebrated forever according to Exodus 13: 14. Paul in 1 Corinthians 5: 7-8 urged the celebration of the Passover in the present. Jesus in Luke 22: 15-16 said he would eat the Passover again in the future. Ezekiel 45: 18-25, Isaiah 66: 23, and Zechariah 14: 16-19 refer to the celebration of the feasts of the Lord in the future. Jesus did not do away with the Old Testament, he gave it deeper and richer meaning. 3. I am under grace and not under the law. If you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you are under grace and not the law. A TRUE study of Hebraic roots will bring you to a greater appreciation of the Old Testament and show the connections between the Testaments in much greater detail, but it will not led one back under the law and the enslavement to a works mentality. |
